Prepare Your Child For a Wonderful Swimming Experience

Any new activity can be intimidating and possibly stressful for some children.  This is especially true of swim lessons.  Even if your child usually loves the water, he or she may be hesitant to join the class.  There are some things you can do to help prepare your child for his/her new swimming experience.

First, talk to your child about the lessons.  Explain that he/she will be swimming with a teacher and that mom and dad will be watching and applauding from the viewing area.

Observe classes with your child.  You are welcome to bring your child to the pool any time during our business hours to observe classes together.  Show him/her the facility and meet some of the staff.  Show your child where he/she will be sitting, swimming, walking etc.  Give your child time to become acclimated to the new environment.

Build a relationship with the staff.  Talk with your child about his/her teacher.  Maybe even draw a picture for his/her new teacher, deck manager or office staff.

Talk about, but do not dwell on any fears your child may have.  Reassure your child that the teacher will always be there for help and encouragement.

Reward your child for a job well done.  Bring a small, special toy that your child can bring into the water after a positive, happy class.  By immediately rewarding your child, he/she will feel success and understand that you are proud.

Inform your child's teacher, deck manager and office staff of any extreme fears or negative swimming experiences your child may have been exposed to.

Reassure your child that you will be watching and cheering for him/her from the viewing area.  Smile, wave and give "thumbs up" during your child's class.  It is OK to be enthusiastic and encouraging during the lesson.

Be supportive and understanding of the fact that learning will take time.  Every child will learn at his/her own pace.  Look for small successes.  Praise and reward your child for each small step he or she may make during this learning process.

Reinforce and practice new skills at home.

Keep your child swimming year round so you don't have to "start over" each swimming season.

Please note that while intensive daily swimming is a great way to get a jump-start into the swimming season, continued reinforcement and practice is the best way to learn and retain any new skill.  We recommend swimming 2-3 times per week all year round to maximize learning and reinforce swimming skills.

We welcome you to the wonderful world of swimming!
